Studying in Australia is exciting, but it comes with real costs. Knowing where your money goes, and how to keep accommodation predictable, is one of the most important habits you can build in your first semester.
Build a fortnightly, not monthly, budget
Most student rentals in Australia are quoted per week, so it pays to think fortnightly. Aim for rent under 35% of your fortnightly income from part-time work, scholarships, and family contributions.
The case for all-bills-included
Electricity, gas, water and internet can swing $40-$80 a week depending on the season. All-bills-included accommodation removes that variance so you know exactly what each Friday's pay needs to cover.
Hidden costs to plan for
Security deposit (typically 2-4 weeks rent), connection fees if utilities aren't included, transport cards, and the occasional emergency repair. Build a small buffer, even $20 a week adds up to $1,000 a year.
